As Sungho peeks inside to see if anyone is there, he's suddenly approached by a large man accusing him of being a thief. Say what?!
Broadcast the Buzz:

With an already overflowing docket of reviews to do, the last thing I needed was to pick up another manhwa. So, what did I do this weekend? Pick up another manhwa, of course. I saw Our Sunny Days on Lezhin, and when I saw the cover art, I was instantly smitten with the baby on the cover. And I don’t really even like kids (my nephews and nieces not withstanding).

Since this is the first webtoon I’m covering from the very beginning, I thought we’d start with the official description from Lezhin:

Sung Ho’s not the kind you’d typically expect to settle down in the countryside. He’s in his late 20s, ex-military, and…a single father with a year-old baby his ex-girlfriend pawned off on him. Jobless and without any prospects but a house, Sung Ho hopes the peaceful Nuldongmae village will make a good new home for him and his daughter. Rumor has it that the head of the village, despite his young age, is a real jerk… But he won’t have to deal with that, will he? But on the very day he moves in, Sung Ho clashes with a tall, good-looking guy who’s got quite the temper and accuses Sung Ho of stealing from his store. This new guy really gets on his nerves, but he does seem to know a lot about the village… Sung Ho’s always been a bit of a lone ranger wherever he goes, so will he be able to let someone else in his life for sunny days up ahead?

Sounds cute, right? The description makes it sound like a lighthearted webtoon, and with the type of stories I normally read, I could use all the fluff I can get.

Episode Summary

34-2 Nuldongmae village. Sungho is touring a potential house in the countryside. It’s a large, beautiful, Korean-style home that was recently rebuilt. It has a beautiful view, and it’s walking distance from the best store in town. This was the perfect place for Sungho… and his baby daughter.

Sungho is warned by the gentleman helping him move that the rumors about country folks aren’t true. They aren’t very kind, and they don’t take too well to outsiders. Plus, the village head is a young guy with the reputation of being a jerk. With his background, however, Sungho seems up for the challenge.

After spending eight years in the military, Sungho came back to Korea with the baby that popped into his life three months ago. His ex-girlfriend that he broke up with over a year ago appeared on his doorstep one day and surprised him with a newborn baby. She said she had done her part by birthing the kid; now it was his turn to raise her.

The baby’s mother suggested that if Sungho didn’t want to be a father, then he could put her up for adoption. But Sungho, a man who grew up with no family or support, now had a family for the first time in his life. He decided to leave his life in the US and start anew with his baby back in his native country.

And so here he is, newly moved into his home, going to visit the supermarket nearby for supplies. When he gets there, he’s met by a “Be Back Later” sign on the door. As he peeks inside to see if anyone is there, Sungho is suddenly approached by a large muscular man who’s accusing him of being a thief. Say what?!

Discussion

Like everyone else who’s reading Our Sunny Days, I’m trying to calculate the maths to figure out if the baby is really Sungho’s. Sungho has had the baby for three months at the point we meet him in the story. He got her when she was a newborn, and a baby is considered a newborn from birth to a max of a month. Now, tack onto that a nine-month pregnancy… 3 + 1 + 9… yeah, that checks out. That’s over a year ago.

So, it really depends on the context of Sungho’s “over a year ago” comment. If he meant over a year ago from when he was given the baby three months earlier, then no, the baby isn’t his. The timing doesn’t fit. But if he meant over a year ago from the point we meet him in the story, then yes. The baby is totally his.

EDIT: I just re-read the description from Lezhin, and it says the baby is a year-old.

What? …N-no. Just, no.

I’ll choose to be blissfully ignorant and pretend that’s a typo. There is no way that the baby in the bassinet is a year old. I may have almost no experience with babies, but at least I know that much.
