When Sung Ho goes inside the community center, Haebom is left talking to the members from the Young Men’s Association. They mention the new city development plan to build luxury apartments and a subway line between Ohnjeongri and Nuldongmae, but to do so, they need to use some of the land that Haebom owns. Haebom, however, doesn’t have any interest in selling any of his land because building new apartments means pushing out the elders and that is something he refuses to do.
The president of the club begins to get aggravated, and despite another member trying to calm him down, he doesn’t listen. The president keeps pushing, asking Haebom why does he even care about the elders if they’re not his family. He calls Haebom a pushover and warns him he’ll end up like his mother.
Sung Ho, leaving the community center, steps in between the two men and stops the argument from escalating further. He says that regardless of what the two were discussing, Haebom has no reason to tolerate such abusive language from anyone. He grabs Haebom by the arm and they leave.
A little later on, they’re at Haebom’s place having dinner and some drinks. Well, Haebom is drinking. Despite being the one to offer to drink, Sung Ho says that he can’t because he has to watch his baby. Haebom changes the subject to the earlier events at the welfare center. He tells Sung Ho not to side with him again. Because he’s a native to the area, he’s used to dealing with the “townies,” but Sung Ho is new and he has a young daughter to think of.
Sung Ho responds that he didn’t want Haebom to feel alone in that moment, leaving the shop owner speechless. Sung Ho’s daughter also responds… by throwing up all over Haebom.
My Takeaways
In this chapter and the last, we’ve learned volumes about Haebom and all of it is indirectly. You have the gossiping women in the community center who revealed that Haebom didn’t have a father, didn’t finish high school yet grew up wealthy. In this episode, through the asshole president, we learn that something happened to Haebom’s mother, so she clearly isn’t in his life anymore either.
In addition, through Haebom’s own words, we learn more about the type of person Haebom is, how compassionate he is. This is displayed through the different philosophies the men have on the new development. Mr. Kim (the president of the men’s association) doesn’t understand why Haebom is refusing to sell his land for people who aren’t even his family. To Haebom, that’s a moot point. It doesn’t matter if the elderly are his blood relatives, he knows that they’re the ones who’ll suffer the most if the development plan comes to fruition.
So despite his rough exterior and nagging nature, Haebom (like I’ve said before) is a good person with such a huge heart. It seems that he’s faced his fair share of tragedies, but that hasn’t stopped him from being a compassionate person. And I think that is so admirable.
