The newest Apothecary Diaries trailer dropped just a couple of days ago on Christmas, and it’s given us a glimpse into what’s coming the next half of the season. We see a few new faces along with the familiar, and of course, there’s mysteries abound!
I haven’t been able to find a trailer with decent English subtitles yet, but as of the writing of this post, the one below is the best I could find (be sure to turn on the closed captioning):
The whole trailer is filled with brand new material. I love it! Me being the obsessed fan that I am, I noticed that they didn’t repeat the yet-to-be-seen scenes from the first trailer. There’s quite a bit we have yet to see, so let’s take a look at what’s coming.
>>>>>WARNING: LIGHT SPOILERS INCOMING!
Let’s start with the newest faces we see in the second trailer:
Loulan, the newest high-consort to the rear palace, replacing the position Ah-duo once held.
Suirei, a court lady who knows just as much about herbs as Maomao
Lakan, a top military official obsessed with Go and Shogi. He made a brief appearance in the previews for episode 13.
Basen, a military officer who works closely with Jinshi and Gaoshun.
I know, Basen isn’t technically new since we saw him at the beginning of episode 5 sparring with Jinshi. He doesn’t play a major role… at least in the second half of this season… but at least we’ll get to see more of him.
Now, let’s look at some scenes from the first trailer. There is A LOT that they didn’t carry on over into the second trailer, so here are some of the shots we’ve yet to see:
The top-left screenshot of Guen (the quack doctor), unknown male, and Maomao is the one shot that I actually can’t recall (without looking at the source material) as to where in the story it comes from. The rest of them… oh, I’m very aware. And I’m very excited to see all of it animated.
The first half of the season has done a great job introducing the characters and the general format of The Apothecary Diaries (think: solving mysteries), and like I’ve said in almost every single one of my reactions, TOHO has stayed true to the source material. I’m sure that’ll carry on into cour two and further develop the characters we know and have come to love.
If I had to liken the cour one to a steady stream of water flowing from a faucet, cour two is about to be a damn waterfall. Although I normally have no issues with discussing spoilers, this time I want to encourage anime-only fans to wait until everything unfolds naturally. (Unless, of course, you want to start reading the series for yourself!) So be sure to tune in when The Apothecary Diaries returns on January 6th for episode 13!
